最近似乎在熱炒所謂的野生型孔雀魚, 其中一個大熱門就是所謂的"霓虹小丑"和"霓虹精靈", 這兩個產品(是同一個種)原本都被稱為Endler's Guppy, 這條魚是John Endler(註一)在委內瑞拉所重新發現的, 然後一直到2005年才由Poester等人將其正式描述為新種, 並獻名給基因工程之父Ojvind Winge(註二)(Poeser, FN, M Kempkes, and IJH Isbrücker, 2005. Description of Poecilia (Acanthophacelus) wingei n. sp. from the Paria Peninsula, Venezuela, including notes on Acanthophacelus Eigenmann, 1907 and other subgenera of Poecilia Bloch and Schneider, 1808 (Teleostei, Cyprinodontiformes, Poeciliidae). Contributions to Zoology 74: 97-115.). 然而在描述新種之前, 有關一般孔雀魚(common guppy)的sexual selection, reproductive isolation與speciation已經有相當多的證據支持這新種的成立(Alexander, H. and F. Breden. 2005. Sexual isolation and extreme morphological divergence in the Cumaná guppy: a possible case of incipient speciation. Journal of Evolutionary Biology 17:1238-125). 值得一提的是在進行多年的遺傳與性擇研究之後, 孔雀魚的演化也朝向視覺生態與opsin gene evolution上探索(Hoffmann, M., Tripathi, N., Henz, S. R., Lindholm, A. K., Weigel, D., Breden, F., and C. Dreyer. 2007. Opsin gene duplication and diversification in the guppy, a model for sexual selection. Proceedings of the Royal Society of London Series B, 274:33-42 .)
